Summary

As soon as Anne Shirley arrives at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she is sure she wants to stay forever 。 。 。 but will the Cuthberts send her back to to the orphanage? Anne knows she's not what they expected—a skinny girl with fiery red hair and a temper to match。 If only she can convince them to let her stay, she'll try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes and blurting out the first thing that comes to her mind。 Anne is not like anyone else, the Cuthberts agree; she is special—a girl with an enormous imagination。 This orphan girl dreams of the day when she can call herself Anne of Green Gables。

I'm SO close to loving this book with my whole heart, because of passages like this:"Oh, I know I'm a great trial to you, Marilla," said Anne repentantly。 "I make so many mistakes。 But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might。" and this (Ted Lasso vibes!):"[She] was a kindred spirit, after all," Anne confided to Marilla。 "You wouldn't think so to look at her, but she is。 You don't find it right out at first, as in Matthew's case, but after a while you come to see it。 Kin I'm SO close to loving this book with my whole heart, because of passages like this:"Oh, I know I'm a great trial to you, Marilla," said Anne repentantly。 "I make so many mistakes。 But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might。" and this (Ted Lasso vibes!):"[She] was a kindred spirit, after all," Anne confided to Marilla。 "You wouldn't think so to look at her, but she is。 You don't find it right out at first, as in Matthew's case, but after a while you come to see it。 Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think。 It's splendid to find out that there are so many of them in the world。" And this, which I could not read aloud without cracking up, and which has a distinct air of Paddington Bear about it for me:Almost a month having elapsed since the liniment cake episode, it was high time for her to get into fresh trouble of some sort, little mistakes, such as absentmindedly emptying a pan of skim milk into a basket of yarn balls in the pantry instead of into the pigs' bucket 。。。 not really being worth counting。 and this absolute punch to the heart:Marilla looked at her with a tenderness that would never have been suffered to reveal itself in any clearer light than soft mingling of fireshine and shadow。 The lesson of a love that should display itself easily in spoken work and open look was one Marilla could never learn。 But she had learned to love this slim, gray-eyed girl with an affection all the deeper and stronger from its very undemonstrativeness。 But I can't, quite, love this book with my whole heart, because there just a handful of things a 21st-century reader may find hard to overlook。 This 21st century reader did。 There's a brutal slap of racism very early on, before I'd quite worked out which characters I was supposed to be identifying with, and there's another sting later, once the reader's presumed sympathies are more clearly established。 And there's an instance of what we would now likely call grooming, mercifully portrayed at some distance, but which jarred me in such an otherwise squeaky-clean book, and to which the blasé response of the community was disturbing。And I realize that these are aspects of the novel that reflect when it was written, if not who wrote it, and that my perspective is not only different from that, but different from the perspective I would have read it with at Anne's age at any point in the story。 But it is what it is。But for all that, there are sentences, paragraphs, pages in this book that I can and do love with my whole heart, and I am glad to have found them。 。。。more

Anne of green gables is an old classic about a little red head girl named Anne。 The Cuthberts where in need of a boy to help around the farm, but there was a mix up and they got Anne, a fiery tempered girl who was always getting into trouble。 I thought this was a great story, It made my laugh and cry。

How did I miss this book in my childhood? I think I would have loved it at an eleven old girl when I was a big fan of Louisa May Alcott 。

Okay I may be biased。I have seen "Anne with an E" on Netflix before getting into this (audio)book。 And I loved both。 The series is much broader and has added a lot that is not implied in the book but it does not diverge a lot from the original story either。 Having enjoyed the characters on the screen I could not help caring so much about them in the book as well。 It felt like I had all this extra information on their personal lives and experiences。 I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book a Okay I may be biased。I have seen "Anne with an E" on Netflix before getting into this (audio)book。 And I loved both。 The series is much broader and has added a lot that is not implied in the book but it does not diverge a lot from the original story either。 Having enjoyed the characters on the screen I could not help caring so much about them in the book as well。 It felt like I had all this extra information on their personal lives and experiences。 I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book as much if I hadn't seen the series neither do I know if I would have had a "better" experience (I don't think so though)。 But I can assure you that Anne is a lovely girl, with a beautiful story and I can't help but to happily fantasize over her life growing up in green gables。 。。。more

I absolutely adored this book。 It felt so familiar to read and like how coming home feels like。 Everything was warm and joyful but still had wise lessons and moments of sadness。 I now understand why people rave about this book。 Now I feel like Anne truly is my 'kindred spirit'。 I absolutely adored this book。 It felt so familiar to read and like how coming home feels like。 Everything was warm and joyful but still had wise lessons and moments of sadness。 I now understand why people rave about this book。 Now I feel like Anne truly is my 'kindred spirit'。 。。。more

This book bypasses every worldly defence your head puts up and goes straight to the heart。 I’ve loved the Canadian film adaptations with Megan Follows since I was young, but this is the first time I’ve read the first book in the series。 I’m so glad I’m getting to know the characters better now, finally。 I really can’t help saying I love Anne and Marilla and Matthew as if they were my own friends。

Nice book, for me it got better as Anne aged, it was a great moment when I started noticing the changes in her character as she matured, but without losing her wonderful personality。I'm thoroughly charmed。 (view spoiler)[The ending hit me like a truck though, I thought it was going to just be a feel good book, wasn't expecting so much tragedy in such a short amount of time, but that's life, I guess。 (hide spoiler)] Nice book, for me it got better as Anne aged, it was a great moment when I started noticing the changes in her character as she matured, but without losing her wonderful personality。I'm thoroughly charmed。 (view spoiler)[The ending hit me like a truck though, I thought it was going to just be a feel good book, wasn't expecting so much tragedy in such a short amount of time, but that's life, I guess。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This was a classic that I haven’t read until now。 It was delightful! Anne is equal parts obnoxious and lovable。 This was so fun to listen to and was one I’m sure I’ll return to。

*Thank you to Sweet Cherry publishing for sending me a gorgeous copy of this book!*Since everyone has been speaking about this TV series and I’ve owned the book for ages, I thought it was finally time to up my classics cred and give it a go。 And I’m glad I did, this was such an easy read。I wasn’t anticipating loving Anne as a character as much as I did, but she was so funny。 I absolutely loved her personality。 One thing I was sad about is that as the book went on, she seemed to lose a lot of it。 *Thank you to Sweet Cherry publishing for sending me a gorgeous copy of this book!*Since everyone has been speaking about this TV series and I’ve owned the book for ages, I thought it was finally time to up my classics cred and give it a go。 And I’m glad I did, this was such an easy read。I wasn’t anticipating loving Anne as a character as much as I did, but she was so funny。 I absolutely loved her personality。 One thing I was sad about is that as the book went on, she seemed to lose a lot of it。 I wish she would’ve stayed as vibrant throughout。 I feel like the writing changed a lot and I know it’s probably supposed to be indicative of her character development, the more I read the less it felt like Anne。 I wasn’t even expecting this novel to span over so many years so the skipping of time periods randomly with no indication threw me off a bit。 I wish it wouldn't have done that。The language was pretty accessible and not too difficult to read for a classic。 It was super fast paced and despite it being almost 400 pages, I got through it really quickly。 The plot was really fast moving and there somehow managed to be endless amounts of drama everyday。 It was written in quite a tongue-in-cheek way。 It made me laugh on a couple of occasions due to the pretty ridiculous nature of some of the things that happen。 It was really fun and quite cute。 I do admit the first half engaged me a lot more than the last half, and then the last 25% or so felt a bit boring to me, but I’m glad I read it。 Also completely random but based on clips I’ve seen of the show, I thought Gilbert would play a much bigger part in this than he did。 He was barely in it!I will say it threw me very off guard when I read an anti-immigrant sentiment in this book directed towards Arab people。 It was just an unnecessary comment made by one of the characters that left a bad taste in my mouth。 There’s also some fatphobic rhetoric in here。 Classics are notorious for this kind of nonsense, but I really wasn’t anticipating it here so just a heads up。 。。。more

While reading I couldn't bring myself to put the book down, but whenever I wasn't reading I had to bring myself to pick it up again。 But the story holds up well even with reading distances, although I have forgotten some names and plot points。For the time the book was written in - and English not being my mother tongue - it was quite easy to read, even if some words and concepts were very foreign to me。 While reading I couldn't bring myself to put the book down, but whenever I wasn't reading I had to bring myself to pick it up again。 But the story holds up well even with reading distances, although I have forgotten some names and plot points。For the time the book was written in - and English not being my mother tongue - it was quite easy to read, even if some words and concepts were very foreign to me。 。。。more
